The Downtown Cumberland Historic District is the principle business district of Cumberland. The most densely built area of town, it also contains the largest buildings, generally three or more stories high. Most of the buildings date from between 1860 and 1930. The buildings have had little exterior alteration with the exception of street level entrances. The predominant building material is brick, usually unpainted though occasionally glazed.
