LUNCH WITH THE ARTS: Jean Barnes Downs
Most people know artist Jean Barnes Downs’ work through her printing of monotypes – one of a kind fine art prints. In her home studio she uses a unique process of printing by hand from a plate that she constructs from unflavored gelatin. For her presentation for Lunch With the Arts, Barnes Downs will demonstrate her unique printing process, showing how the supple nature of the gelatin allows her to get fine detail from natural objects, fabrics and other textures. Less familiar may be Jean’s love of drawing. “I am not a plein air artist, but I find that when I draw bits and pieces of an object or a place and review that simple drawing months or years later, I am dropped right back in that location.” This simple process is something that everyone can learn to do. In addition to the printing, Barnes Downs plans to engage the audience in learning to “awaken the eye.” Jean will teach simple exercises that every person is capable of to engage their inner artist. For those who know her it will not be a surprise that she proclaims the innate creativity of every person. “If I could learn to draw, anyone can,” says Jean.
